  • Random Musings

So I have been learning alot of Korean the last few years. I have said hello and goodbye to alot of language partners too. One of them knew Lee Sun Gyun "the voice" 이선균 and I got his autograph and pic! (My mom and I were smiling ear to ear!) Today, I just mailed off a photo album I made, decorated and created collages to a good friend and  주영동생. Got to do lots of 노래방, eating samgyupsal and other good stuff. I made alot of friends too. (Cannot believe we met over a year ago too!)

Now I want to improve my Korean but is seriously a hobby. I am proud to be Chinese American, but I enjoy my Korean dramas/kpop. Keeping the mind sharp with learning a new language is always good. What a challenge!

FB, I realize lately on Facebook, I don't use it much. I guess knowing about the privacy issues they have makes me queasy. I twitter, even then I do more retweeting than writing my own stuff. I like to share but not "everything."

Keeping up with food and being involved (though not cooking) has been fun. For one of my Korean friends, I cooked for them. He cracked me up saying I should open a restaurant in Seoul. He was amazed I hid my supposed "cooking talents" from him. Working for my dad in my tender years sure paid off, but working in a kitchen is a pressure cooker. Hats off to those who do it!

Work, boss is out this week so it has been quiet.

Trying to bond with 윤하 but with 3 year olds, it is not easy. She is adorable though!

Chihuly at MFA has been awesome and I have brought many to see it and to enjoy.

Sharing is truly caring! I always loved this phrase!

Now I have to write another review for my next deadline. Well it keeps me on my toes.

  • One week

Today marks exactly one week of paying for internet at my place. It is weird and awesome at the same time. No more weak signals and I can now SKYPE! Problem is my computer is a pain. This particular model likes to "kill" the audio and I have not control. Also I cannot fix it as this apparently in all the forums I found mentioned it is a known but very unfixable problem.

It is nice to be able to FB, catch up on my fave videos or cheesily sing along to my fave songs if I want to.

  • Banh Mi

Banh Mi-a tasty and cheap meal!

    by Anna Ing on June 24, 2011 @ sampan.org

Go to any Asian community and you are sure to find one of the top famous Vietnamese food item besides pho (beef noodle soup) and it is  the beloved banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), which is sold at small shops, food courts, and bakeries all over. This simple Vietnamese export is a delicious and inexpensive meal for under $5, plus it blends the best of both worlds- from the French and Vietnamese together. Under French Colonialism, the Vietnamese took the French’s simple sandwiches using bread, butter and simple pate (ground liver with spices), meats or cheese into a savory feast with their twist. Overall freshness matters with making a delicious banh mi sandwich: first take a crusty French bread (using rice flour for extra crunch), then slather the condiment-mayo, fish sauce (nuoc mam), or soy sauce based spread, next put on your desired protein: grilled pork, beef, chicken, fried egg as well as tofu or headcheese, veggies (cilantro, mint, basil, onions), chilies and pickled carrots and daikon for added crunch.

Boston’s own Chinatown has two places that sell banh mi.  One is New Saigon Sandwich at 696 Washington St (Between Kneeland and LaGrange Streets 617-542-6296) in Chinatown across from Dumpling Cafe. They provide eight different sandwiches from the Vietnamese Cold Cut (banh mi thit), Shredded pork (banh mi bi), Teriyaki Beef (bo xao), BBQ Beef (bo nuong), Teriyaki Chicken (ga xao), Vegetarian Tofu (dau hu), Curry Chicken (ca ri ga) and Banh Mi Xiu Mai (Xiu Mai). Also there are a few box meals available if you are not in the mood for a banh mi.

One block away is 163 Vietnamese Sandwiches and Bubble Tea at 66 Harrison Avenue (617-542-7903), which also has a similar banh mi menu. But they have also offer bun (vermicelli), spring rolls and as well as a wide variety of boxed meals with a choice of rice or noodles topped with eel, bbq pork chop among a variety of tasty options. Also they have an extensive beverage menu with plenty fruit shakes (with or without bubbles (chewy tapioca pearls). At both shops, the most expensive banh mi is only $3.25 (even with tax!)

Now there is a food truck called Bon Me (www.bonmetruck.com) that sells banh mi as well from Monday through Fridays at Boston’s City Plaza from 11:30am-3pm in addition to going to other places all around the city.  Don’t fret, you can also go to Kam Man’s food court in Quincy or go to Allston at Pho Viet at the Super88 food court too. Why not try a banh mi the next time you want something different from the ordinary ho hum peanut butter and jelly sandwich?

You can count on me like one, two, three I’ll be there
Count on you like four, three, two You’ll be there
You can count on me
    ooh~ ooh yeah

I am such a big fan of Alex Chu. He is back with his second solo album effort "Just Like Me" after a three year absence. Originally when I heard "She Is," his sweet vocals captured my attention. Then when "My Vintage Romance" came out it only solidified his "Romantic Guy" status thanks to the first season outing in the Korean Variety show "WGM" with his pairing with pretty actress/model Shinae. yeah!

    ======================

알렉스는 이날 두 번째 정규앨범 'JUST LIKE ME'를 발매했다.

  • Basho-A Modern & Hip Brasserie

Basho- A Modern and Hip Brasserie

by Anna Ing on May 13, 2011

Boston has plenty of Japanese Restaurants. But Basho Japanese Brasserie is a breath of fresh air. Amidst the usual sushi and sashimi choices, they also have the robata grill (on skewer). Located in the recently redeveloped Fenway area (1338 Boylston St, Boston (617) 262-1338), Basho has already garnered some fans. The decor is modern and minimal. Patrons can even get free Wi-Fi.

First comes the steamed bun sandwich with kurabota pork and pickled cucumber ($7.75) in bamboo steamers. The perfectly marinated pork belly and refreshing cucumber pair well with the steamed bun, but could use a bit more sauce. The Dobin Mushi soup is served in a pot with seafood and chicken ($7.50), topped with ginger slivers, which cleanse and refresh the palate. Off the Robata Grill comes one skewer each of the tsukune (the seasoned ground chicken) ($4.00) and the Spicy Duck Mushroom ($6.50).The grilled but flavorful ground chicken as well as the duck with mustard and mushroom are delectable.

Their inventive makimono rolls list makes it hard for diners to choose. Green Monster Roll ($14.95) has softshell crab with spicy mayo wrapped with escolar (white tuna) with an interesting flavor twist of cilantro pesto. Their weekly special is the popular Celtics Maki burrito ($16.95), which has spicy tuna, avocado and cilantro wrapped with soy paper and seaweed, topped with unagi served with basil oil and jalopeno aioli.  Brown rice can be substituted for an additional fee.

For dessert, there is sorbet ($6.95) and the cheesecake harumaki ($7.95). With the colorful flavored sorbet molded in a small shape of the actual fruits (raspberry, strawberry and peach), this is the most beautifully arranged sorbet, subtle and refreshing. The harumaki is a cheesecake deep fried as an egg roll served with raspberry sauce and chocolate shavings.

  • MFA-LGBT Film Festival 5/5-5/16/2011

So the Boston Museum of Fine Arts is one of the venues for this years LGBT Film Festival. I was there at opening night to a packed Remis Auditorium! (So packed I ended up standing through the movie.)

I did enjoy this movie, at first I did not know what to make of it. But it was not your usual flick. My friends enjoyed it but some of the men in the audience did not find the ending satisfying.

Trailer (no english subs)  click on "Kino" cr: Kino

    BLURB courtesy of MFA Boston:

3 by Tom Tykwer (Germany, 2011, 104 min.). From the director of Run, Lola, Run and The International comes a sexy romantic drama with a nod to classic Hollywood screwball comedies. Hanna and Simon, a couple in their early forties, live together in Berlin. With their 20th anniversary looming, they both become restless despite being truly and deeply in love. Unbeknownst to one another, they become acquainted with Adam, a younger man, and fall in love with him. Clearly not your typical 1930s romp, Tykwer’s sleek direction yields a playful reinvention of those classic films, an intellectual study of a modern couple looking for redefinition in a world of absolutes. In German with English subtitles. Official Selection of the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.

    Zaftigs- An Untraditional Jewish Deli

by Anna Ing on April 22, 2011 Sampan

For 14 years, Coolidge Corner’s own Zaftigs Delicatessen [335 Harvard Street, Brookline (617)975-0075] has served breakfast all day! Yiddish for “deliciously plump,” Zaftigs has pleased customers with an extensive menu with over 200+ items including breakfast, sandwiches, salads, soups and entrees with generous portions.  Best of all, their prices won’t bust your budget either!

Assorted toasted bagel chips are served while diners peruse the non- traditional Jewish menu. The kitschy décor with cool artwork by Daniel “Danny” O’Connor graces the walls throughout the dining room.  First up, the legendary Banana Stuffed French Toast ($9.95) has the bread dipped in a bourbon vanilla batter served with date butter, dusted with powdered sugar and fresh berries: sinfully delicious! Another must try is their delicious homemade big Matzo ball in chicken noodle soup (in three different sizes- 1 cup $3.75). Carrots, noodles and chicken steeped in a flavorful broth that would make grandma proud.

Make sure to get their amazing corned beef hash (side $3.95) which is so flavorful and delicious, far superior to any canned version! Next comes a big slice of the Sweet Noodle Kugel ($4.95) which here is served as a baked, layered egg noodle dish with cinnamon and nutmeg; such a lovely treat.

Weekends will find this place packed with long lines to rival any Chinatown dim sum restaurant! It is worth the wait! Now, there is a second location in Natick too! Zaftigs has consistently garnered accolades and honors for a good reason with delicious eats and reasonable prices; they still continue to draw the crowds!
