    그래 웃어봐 - M시그널
M Signal - So Give Me A Smile (eng subs-SOOMPI "Hearstrings" Forum cr: stardusts)

Yes, smile so happiness will come
Yes, smile so the love can come into my embrace
Even all the dreams like the stars in the sky

    Yes, get up- don't collapse
Yes, get up- even if it's one step per day
Even if it's a slow walk- it's okay

When tears form in my eyes
When tears flow on my cheeks
Cry out loudly- the sadness will be shocked and run away

    When my heart is crumbling
When my heart is so in pain
Laugh loudly- so hope can come find me

Now it's ok- I can laugh
Now it's ok- only if I am with you
Because when I'm tired, I can rest

Even if it's a bit high, I can climb over it
Even if my road is blocked, I can go around it
Never stop in that one place

When tears form in my eyes
When tears flow on my cheeks
Cry out loudly- the sadness will be shocked and run away

    When my heart is crumbling
When my heart is so in pain
Laugh loudly- so hope can come find me

    Spread out your arms widely

I may fall down but that's not failure
Just brush it off lightly- I'm not crying
Because I can just get up and run again

Sometimes I can smile for love
Sometimes I can cry for love
Because everything will make me stronger

Sometimes I risk it all for love
Sometimes I regret because of love
But it's ok- I will dream again today
And set out to the road

    Cutty’s- A Brookline Village Gem

by Anna Ing on August 12, 2011 (SAMPAN)

Cutty’s is an amazing neighborhood gem nestled in Brookline Village (284 Washington Street, Brookline, MA 02445 (617) 505-1844). With their high quality, delicious and local fare thought up by owner Charles Kelsey, a former editor at Cook’s Illustrated Magazine and a Culinary of Art Institute graduate, it is not your run of the mill sandwich lunch spot. They have a simple menu that has something for everyone with daily specials ranging from Broccoli Rabe or Pork Torta sandwiches to the Saturday Only Pork Rabe and Pork Fennel sandwiches.

Since last year, sandwich aficionados have been flocking to Cutty’s. From their amazing tomato soup, which my picky sister even raves out it to their lovely sandwiches, there is something for everyone. After one sip of the tomato soup, you can never go back to Campbells again. The popular Roast Beef 1000 sandwich is elevated to a foodie’s delight with great attention to flavor in every bite! First is the lightly toasted black pepper brioche, then the thinly sliced roast beef, sharp cheddar, Thousand Island dressing topped with the lovely crunchy shallots to complete this sandwich. The ingredients all harmonize so well together that it is no wonder this sandwich is their top seller!

One daily special sandwich is their Broccoli Rabe (vegetable used in Chinese and Italian cooking) sandwich. The slightly bitterness of the sauteed broccoli rabe is mellowed when combined with the mozzarella cheese and topped with the yummy tomato jam in a warm sesame bun, making it a satisfying meal. If you don’t want a sandwich, then try their Wheat Berry Beet over some mesclun (“mixture” of an assortment of young salad leaves) greens. (Wheat berry is the entire wheat kernel and is an excellent source of fiber.) The simplicity of the wheat berry and beets is both delicious and nutritious!

Cutty’s boasts delicious and quality food, quick and friendly service with a smile while having consistent attention to details in their flavorful menu offerings with the most expensive item being $8! If you happen to be in the Brookline Village during lunch time, check out Cutty’s!

Spy Myungwol OST - Part 4 - Bobby Kim & Gil Hak Mi: 사랑할 수 있을 때 While We Still Can Love

나와 가까운 친구들 곁에 있어 의지가 되지만
although I can get reliance from close friends who are beside me
    그것만으로 살아가기는 어려워
it’s difficult to live on with just that
또 다른 내가 되어줄 흔히 사랑이라 부르는
what is often call love is what that become of another me
오직 한 사람 내게는 니가 필요해
just one person. To me, I need you

come close to me and let’s go on a life journey together
Do you hear me, do you feel me

don’t be shaken although there will be days that you feel like crying
Do you want me, do you love me
Do you want me, do you love me

  • King Hawaiian

    So Cal fave King Hawaiian

by Anna Ing on July 22, 2011 SAMPAN

To stir things up a bit, here is a review of an out-of-town place. Earlier this month, I went to a popular and highly recommended Southern California mainstay for Hawaiian and American Cuisine called King Hawaiian Bakery and Restaurant (2808 Sepulveda Blvd, Torrance, CA 310-530-0050) and the family has been in business since 1950. Diners are greeted with a mouthwatering display of baked goods before entering the main dining room. Their trademark and award winning lightly sweetened, soft and delicious Hawaiian Bread needs no butter and is served while patrons browse their menus.

Hawaiian Regional Cuisine (HRC) echoes the diversity of Hawaii with Portuguese, Polynesian, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Filipino influences and flavors in their cuisine. Did you know that Hawaii is the second highest consumer of Spam (luncheon meat) just after Guam? During World War II, when fish was banned, Spam became widely consumed. A popular snack called Spam Musubi consists of a fried and marinated slice of Spam wrapped in rice and nori (dried flat seaweed).  It is served as an appetizer that can also be found in the King’s Hawaiian Platter. Other delicious items in the platter include the Ahi Poke (sushi grade Tuna seasoned served over cabbage), Fried Calamari(breaded served with cocktail sauce), Kalua Nachos (Kalua Pork- lightly seasoned pulled pork) served with the regular fixings-beans, cheese, sour cream, guacamole and a tropical twist of pineapple salsa along with the Fried Sesame Wings. The Nachos and Ahi Poke were delicious while the Calamari had a little too much batter on it. The Fried Sesame Wings were a bit of a disappointment, being a little overcooked.

Hawaiian lunch plates “local style” are traditionally served with two scoops of white rice and one scoop of macaroni salad with a choice of the entree. The Chicken Katsu Curry plate had the macaroni salad and rice; in addition to the panko (Japanese flaky bread crumb) encrusted fried Chicken cutlet cut up and smothered with a delicious Japanese curry sauce laden with onions, carrots and potatoes. The curry was mild and flavorful but not spicy, which went well with the crunchy chicken. So, for a taste of Hawaii in So Cal, go where the locals go to King Hawaiian.

  • Friend's wedding in Redondo Beach

This past long weekend, I went to LA area and caught up with pals. But the focus was to attend my dear friend and his wife's wedding ceremony and reception. I was asked to make a toast as it was a small gathering (30 people) and no maid/matron of honor or best man. It was an honor as he is like a lil bro who I met through our friend EQ when he was doing his masters at MIT. Who knew would room together for almost 8 years! I was with him through his ups and downs doing his aerospace PH.D at MIT. Now he is a married man to a woman who adores him but also challenges him as his lil "devil."

As our other roomie SW said, it was one of the most emotional weddings ever! I agree! When our friend HV made his vows, we were floored at his emotions. The usually unemotive and undemonstrative HV was causing all of us to tear up with his heartfelt emotion and sincerity! So proud of him!

I tried to help with the little tasks, waving in the bride, waving in the parents getting into the reception, sitting at the gift table with the guest book and making the toast. Or running errands such as getting the camcorder or carrying stuff back to the room, helping the bride change etc. But I with shaking hands, I made my speech was the biggest duty of that night. I said a few words in Korean (practiced it over and over and even called my pal 유진 back in Boston to makes sure it was right! Then asked my mom for the Cantonese portion. But I winged the English part (with some notes to cover stuff). I covered the history of knowing the groom even tossing in how SW and HV did not like each other initially! (Got a few chuckles) I had to mention EQ as he was the one who asked me to take care of his boy HV when he went back to California. When I got to mentioning my first meeting with his now wife SC. I recall meandering around LACMA and talking with her. She was not good with English and me not good in Korean. But I got the point across that if she was not nice to my bro/friend HV she was going to hear from me. Surprisingly, she liked me and my candor and called me 언니 from the get go. (I told her we are in America and I am Chinese American to boot, but she kept saying I command respect in her eyes.) I even tossed in how I enjoye seeing them being able to find each other.

No relationship has perpetual smooth sailing, they have their ups and downs, but I wish them all the best! To a great couple!

Thanks for letting me part of your special day! *hugs Now both my roomies and their friends are all wed off.

  • The Haven

The Haven-a little piece of Scotland

by Anna Ing on July 8, 2011 (Sampan)

Open for a year, The Haven (2 Perkins Street, Jamaica Plain, MA (617) 524-2836, located in Jamaica Plain’s Hyde Square, has been bringing Caledonian food at this gastropub in a city overrun by Irish pubs. The simple menu does consist of a lot of fried items, but it varies every so often. This hotspot serves Scottish craft beers, house made cuisine by Chef Wax and has live music!

First off is oat cakes (delicious bread with hints of honey) served with butter and house made pickled vegetables to nibble on. The appetizer portion of the famous Haggis and Neeps $9 (sausage with offal (entrails and innards), spices, and oats) has a distinctive nutty flavor that is not for the faint hearted.  It is served over a tasty honey, truffle mashed rutabaga (Swedish yellow turnip) and Drambuie (malt whiskey flavored with honey and herbs) butter. Haggis is always served every January 25th on a Scottish Holiday to celebrate Scotland’s favorite son and national Poet Robert Burns (aka Rabbie Burns), who also wrote “Auld Lang Syne”

Next came the Scotch Deviled Egg $8 (commonly served with salad and pickles) which consisted of one egg, deep fried and cut in half, wrapped with ground sausage meat and filled with deviled egg accompanied by a simple, lightly dressed arugula salad served with a lovely spicy yellow mustard for a nice kick.

The main entrée was the Sassitch and Mash $18: a Hunter’s Sausage and Yukon potato mash with bits of skin, herbs  along with roasted celeriac (root vegetable) and onion jus. The sausage was not overly salty and tasted delicious with the lovely green celeriac (celery root) and potato mash.

A very non Scottish dessert is the chocolate bread pudding served with an original flair topped with coconut curry ice cream. Surprisingly, the coconut curry ice cream served as a lovely contrast to the balanced bread pudding which was not overly dry but moist. If you want to try haggis without traveling to Scotland, The Haven is the place to go!

  • Random Musings

So I have been learning alot of Korean the last few years. I have said hello and goodbye to alot of language partners too. One of them knew Lee Sun Gyun "the voice" 이선균 and I got his autograph and pic! (My mom and I were smiling ear to ear!) Today, I just mailed off a photo album I made, decorated and created collages to a good friend and  주영동생. Got to do lots of 노래방, eating samgyupsal and other good stuff. I made alot of friends too. (Cannot believe we met over a year ago too!)

Now I want to improve my Korean but is seriously a hobby. I am proud to be Chinese American, but I enjoy my Korean dramas/kpop. Keeping the mind sharp with learning a new language is always good. What a challenge!

FB, I realize lately on Facebook, I don't use it much. I guess knowing about the privacy issues they have makes me queasy. I twitter, even then I do more retweeting than writing my own stuff. I like to share but not "everything."

Keeping up with food and being involved (though not cooking) has been fun. For one of my Korean friends, I cooked for them. He cracked me up saying I should open a restaurant in Seoul. He was amazed I hid my supposed "cooking talents" from him. Working for my dad in my tender years sure paid off, but working in a kitchen is a pressure cooker. Hats off to those who do it!

Work, boss is out this week so it has been quiet.

Trying to bond with 윤하 but with 3 year olds, it is not easy. She is adorable though!

Chihuly at MFA has been awesome and I have brought many to see it and to enjoy.

Sharing is truly caring! I always loved this phrase!

Now I have to write another review for my next deadline. Well it keeps me on my toes.

  • One week

Today marks exactly one week of paying for internet at my place. It is weird and awesome at the same time. No more weak signals and I can now SKYPE! Problem is my computer is a pain. This particular model likes to "kill" the audio and I have not control. Also I cannot fix it as this apparently in all the forums I found mentioned it is a known but very unfixable problem.

It is nice to be able to FB, catch up on my fave videos or cheesily sing along to my fave songs if I want to.

  • Banh Mi

Banh Mi-a tasty and cheap meal!

    by Anna Ing on June 24, 2011 @ sampan.org

Go to any Asian community and you are sure to find one of the top famous Vietnamese food item besides pho (beef noodle soup) and it is  the beloved banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich), which is sold at small shops, food courts, and bakeries all over. This simple Vietnamese export is a delicious and inexpensive meal for under $5, plus it blends the best of both worlds- from the French and Vietnamese together. Under French Colonialism, the Vietnamese took the French’s simple sandwiches using bread, butter and simple pate (ground liver with spices), meats or cheese into a savory feast with their twist. Overall freshness matters with making a delicious banh mi sandwich: first take a crusty French bread (using rice flour for extra crunch), then slather the condiment-mayo, fish sauce (nuoc mam), or soy sauce based spread, next put on your desired protein: grilled pork, beef, chicken, fried egg as well as tofu or headcheese, veggies (cilantro, mint, basil, onions), chilies and pickled carrots and daikon for added crunch.

Boston’s own Chinatown has two places that sell banh mi.  One is New Saigon Sandwich at 696 Washington St (Between Kneeland and LaGrange Streets 617-542-6296) in Chinatown across from Dumpling Cafe. They provide eight different sandwiches from the Vietnamese Cold Cut (banh mi thit), Shredded pork (banh mi bi), Teriyaki Beef (bo xao), BBQ Beef (bo nuong), Teriyaki Chicken (ga xao), Vegetarian Tofu (dau hu), Curry Chicken (ca ri ga) and Banh Mi Xiu Mai (Xiu Mai). Also there are a few box meals available if you are not in the mood for a banh mi.

One block away is 163 Vietnamese Sandwiches and Bubble Tea at 66 Harrison Avenue (617-542-7903), which also has a similar banh mi menu. But they have also offer bun (vermicelli), spring rolls and as well as a wide variety of boxed meals with a choice of rice or noodles topped with eel, bbq pork chop among a variety of tasty options. Also they have an extensive beverage menu with plenty fruit shakes (with or without bubbles (chewy tapioca pearls). At both shops, the most expensive banh mi is only $3.25 (even with tax!)

Now there is a food truck called Bon Me (www.bonmetruck.com) that sells banh mi as well from Monday through Fridays at Boston’s City Plaza from 11:30am-3pm in addition to going to other places all around the city.  Don’t fret, you can also go to Kam Man’s food court in Quincy or go to Allston at Pho Viet at the Super88 food court too. Why not try a banh mi the next time you want something different from the ordinary ho hum peanut butter and jelly sandwich?
