  • 알렉스 3년만에 컴백, 파격 모

I am such a big fan of Alex Chu. He is back with his second solo album effort "Just Like Me" after a three year absence. Originally when I heard "She Is," his sweet vocals captured my attention. Then when "My Vintage Romance" came out it only solidified his "Romantic Guy" status thanks to the first season outing in the Korean Variety show "WGM" with his pairing with pretty actress/model Shinae. yeah!

  • Basho-A Modern & Hip Brasserie

Basho- A Modern and Hip Brasserie

by Anna Ing on May 13, 2011

Boston has plenty of Japanese Restaurants. But Basho Japanese Brasserie is a breath of fresh air. Amidst the usual sushi and sashimi choices, they also have the robata grill (on skewer). Located in the recently redeveloped Fenway area (1338 Boylston St, Boston (617) 262-1338), Basho has already garnered some fans. The decor is modern and minimal. Patrons can even get free Wi-Fi.

First comes the steamed bun sandwich with kurabota pork and pickled cucumber ($7.75) in bamboo steamers. The perfectly marinated pork belly and refreshing cucumber pair well with the steamed bun, but could use a bit more sauce. The Dobin Mushi soup is served in a pot with seafood and chicken ($7.50), topped with ginger slivers, which cleanse and refresh the palate. Off the Robata Grill comes one skewer each of the tsukune (the seasoned ground chicken) ($4.00) and the Spicy Duck Mushroom ($6.50).The grilled but flavorful ground chicken as well as the duck with mustard and mushroom are delectable.

Their inventive makimono rolls list makes it hard for diners to choose. Green Monster Roll ($14.95) has softshell crab with spicy mayo wrapped with escolar (white tuna) with an interesting flavor twist of cilantro pesto. Their weekly special is the popular Celtics Maki burrito ($16.95), which has spicy tuna, avocado and cilantro wrapped with soy paper and seaweed, topped with unagi served with basil oil and jalopeno aioli.  Brown rice can be substituted for an additional fee.

For dessert, there is sorbet ($6.95) and the cheesecake harumaki ($7.95). With the colorful flavored sorbet molded in a small shape of the actual fruits (raspberry, strawberry and peach), this is the most beautifully arranged sorbet, subtle and refreshing. The harumaki is a cheesecake deep fried as an egg roll served with raspberry sauce and chocolate shavings.

  • MFA-LGBT Film Festival 5/5-5/16/2011

So the Boston Museum of Fine Arts is one of the venues for this years LGBT Film Festival. I was there at opening night to a packed Remis Auditorium! (So packed I ended up standing through the movie.)

I did enjoy this movie, at first I did not know what to make of it. But it was not your usual flick. My friends enjoyed it but some of the men in the audience did not find the ending satisfying.

Trailer (no english subs)  click on "Kino" cr: Kino

    BLURB courtesy of MFA Boston:

3 by Tom Tykwer (Germany, 2011, 104 min.). From the director of Run, Lola, Run and The International comes a sexy romantic drama with a nod to classic Hollywood screwball comedies. Hanna and Simon, a couple in their early forties, live together in Berlin. With their 20th anniversary looming, they both become restless despite being truly and deeply in love. Unbeknownst to one another, they become acquainted with Adam, a younger man, and fall in love with him. Clearly not your typical 1930s romp, Tykwer’s sleek direction yields a playful reinvention of those classic films, an intellectual study of a modern couple looking for redefinition in a world of absolutes. In German with English subtitles. Official Selection of the 2010 Toronto Film Festival.

    Zaftigs- An Untraditional Jewish Deli

by Anna Ing on April 22, 2011 Sampan

For 14 years, Coolidge Corner’s own Zaftigs Delicatessen [335 Harvard Street, Brookline (617)975-0075] has served breakfast all day! Yiddish for “deliciously plump,” Zaftigs has pleased customers with an extensive menu with over 200+ items including breakfast, sandwiches, salads, soups and entrees with generous portions.  Best of all, their prices won’t bust your budget either!

Assorted toasted bagel chips are served while diners peruse the non- traditional Jewish menu. The kitschy décor with cool artwork by Daniel “Danny” O’Connor graces the walls throughout the dining room.  First up, the legendary Banana Stuffed French Toast ($9.95) has the bread dipped in a bourbon vanilla batter served with date butter, dusted with powdered sugar and fresh berries: sinfully delicious! Another must try is their delicious homemade big Matzo ball in chicken noodle soup (in three different sizes- 1 cup $3.75). Carrots, noodles and chicken steeped in a flavorful broth that would make grandma proud.

Make sure to get their amazing corned beef hash (side $3.95) which is so flavorful and delicious, far superior to any canned version! Next comes a big slice of the Sweet Noodle Kugel ($4.95) which here is served as a baked, layered egg noodle dish with cinnamon and nutmeg; such a lovely treat.

Weekends will find this place packed with long lines to rival any Chinatown dim sum restaurant! It is worth the wait! Now, there is a second location in Natick too! Zaftigs has consistently garnered accolades and honors for a good reason with delicious eats and reasonable prices; they still continue to draw the crowds!

  • Seven Courses of Beef

    Seven courses of beef

by Anna Ing on April 7, 2011 Sampan

One of my favorite Vietnamese meals is Bo 7 mon or “7 courses of beef” can be found in the heart of Boston’s Chinatown at Pho Hoa II (17 Beach Street, Boston, MA (617) 423-3934).   Although the menu reads that the meal can feed two people, it can easily be eaten amongst three. This is not your normal pho, but more for special occasions such as weddings. Though Pho Hoa II has undergone some renovations due to a fire not long ago, their new look is nice. A large fish tank livens up the dining room along with the dark wood tables and chairs.

You will quickly find out that big table space is needed, when an array of dishes are brought out. First off are the two dipping sauces, one is the usual nuoc mam (fish sauce) and the other is a bit strong and pungent, anchovy or fermented bean based sauce-not for the faint hearted! Of course there is plenty of chili sauce readily available if you need a kick. A big heaping plate of herbs, along with slices of cucumber, apple, carrot and daikon (radish) as well as lettuce leaves along and bean sprouts are given. A big, steaming bowl of hot water is given to be used for dipping the provided round, thin, rice wrappers and a plate of vermicelli noodles. Diners may wrap their own their own rolls with these ingredients and the beef.

To make a roll, first take one rice paper wrapper. Quickly dip it in the hot water for a few seconds. Then lay down the desired ingredients and beef. I love the herbs and veggies, but I go easy on the vermicelli. Roll it once, then grab each side and bring them to the center and tuck to roll again. Don’t put too much food into your wrapper!  Then dip into your desired dipping sauce and enjoy. The crunchy, fresh vegetables along with the flavorful beef slices combined with the nuoc mam is simply delicious!

The first courses is the beef salad (goi bo) which consists of thin beef strips mixed with pickled celery, daikon, cucumber, and carrot served with a nuoc mam dressing. Then the next three courses are served together, (bo la lot ) the grilled beef encased by a lolot leaf  (la lot –similar to a grape leaf used in Mediterranean cooking) as well as (bo cha dum) a big meatball mixed with vermicelli then quartered served with crispy shrimp chips. The combination of the lolot leaf and the grilled beef is flavorful and delicious. Another course is a plate of thinly sliced raw beef is served with either lime or lemon slices to be squeezed onto the beef.

Next is a plate of sliced raw beef topped with onion slices to be cooked in a broth (bo nhung dam) which you wait to be heated up. Once bubbling, one quickly dips the onion and beef slices til cooked. Next up is the butter sautéed beef slices sprinkled with fragrant lemon grass bits. Last but not least is the beef congee (rice soup) (chao bo) which is a tasty and satisfying finale to a wonderful culinary journey.

Of course, Pho Hoa II has a extensive full menu with all your usual Vietnamese favorites. If you don’t like beef, you can have the fish alternative called Ca 7 Mon.

Facebook and Twitter do take up alot of time as well as some blogs I follow. Wow ways to eat up time and not be too productive. Scary!

  • Cherry Blossoms and DC recap

    image full credit: brookeabigail.wordpress.com

Last week, I lucked out and saw the Cherry Blossoms at their peak in DC. A few years back, I told my mom I would take her to DC to see them. It is not so easy to see them though. It takes alot of luck and timing. All you need is one good rain or windy storm and they are all gone. I had bought the tickets via Jetblue at a great price $129 RT back in January. All these months I had my fingers crossed hoping I would be lucky.

I had tried in prior years but would just miss seeing then, but truth be told I was not trying hard enough.

Though the forecast had rain in it, plus cool temps we still did well. Last Friday we strolled the Tidal Basin for 3 hours (9-12pm), despite the cold temps we had a blast. My mom was all smiles. This alone was worth it for me! The gods were kind and I am thankful!

We landed on Thursday morning at DCA and it was cloudy and looked drizzly. Laila was kind enough to pick us up and take us to Georgetown for lunch. We had crab cakes and soup with crab as well. Then off to the Smithsonians-Sackler/Freer for the Asian art though the Whistler Peacock room was sadly closed. Then we hit up the Natural History Museum---Cyprus exhibit/Hope Diamond/Exotic Orchids. by this time we did take many breaks. (I was going on only 2 hours of sleep because I was at work til midnight the prior night.)

After parting ways, we headed to Alexandria and took the free shuttle and ate at Mai Thai on King Street (last stop of the free shuttle). The food was good. On Friday after my friend had to go to work, we took the Blue Line in and walked over from the Smithsonian stop to the Tidal Basin. We did do some detours through the Jefferson Memorial and the FDR Memorial too. By the end, my mom wanted to go to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. At the time it was 12:20 and we were told next tickets were 5:45pm. Unless we did not mind not going in together, we could go in at 1:15 and 1:30 respectively for the 40 minute tour.

Luckily the ticket person told us the nearest place for lunch is the FDA cafeteria WING 2 (a bit of a walk) and we just had some sandwiches and soup to tide us over. We made the tour and my mom had to take a pic by the 1 million dollar stack made up of $10 bills! Wow it was huge! Seeing the rules and how every 10 years they do different thing to change our money to avoid it being counterfeited is cool. Did you know all the bills over $10 the ink (colored) in one corner will change color at different angels? (I did not know that one!)

Then off to American History to show Julia Child's kitchen, President Lincoln's life, Burden of being President, First Lady's gowns including First Lady Michelle Obama's gown designed by Jason Wu. It was cool. The "Sweet and Sour" exhibit on the history of Chinese food was one small display and not well advertised either. Then we decided to go to Teaism for a bite to eat. Later we got back and my hostess took me over to her brother's home to play with her now 3 year old niece Isabella (who is a cutie patootie). Her mom is expecting another girl in May. Isabella is so honest and her expressions engaged all of us! Her father was relieved she got alot of attention and that he could take a breather too.

Saturday we went along with our hosts to the Japan Freedom Walk. We did have a moment of silence for the March 11th Japanese Earthquake & Tsunami. The ambassador of Japan was kind enough to come by and say a few words. Afterwords we took some pics at the Capitol Building. Then we went to the National Gallery to see the Gaugin and Cannoletto exhibits. Got to catchup with my friend 妹妹 and her cutie son Sebastian who is now 4! William was there too and we caught dimsum in DC Chinatown. (Now I know why I NEVER ate in DC Chinatown. There are only two places and we went to Tony Cheng (within walking distance of the metro). Later we went to the book signing and short speech by Cheryl Tan of her memoir growing up in Singapore and there are 10 recipes that are included as well. (It was at Cafe Asia in Rosslyn but that metro stop was very steep. Even my knees got a little weak going up on it.)

Afterwards, my good buddy JH and I (now the sun is coming out) hung out and went to Tenelytown and Bethesda (stones throw away) with his lovely partner MP to Zen Tara Tea (Bethesda Avenue). I tried the seasonal Cherry Blossom tea ($4.50 for a pot) and it was fragrant/herbal and delicious. This tony neighborhood is swanky but hopping on a Saturday night. (We had a hard time getting a place to seat us at 7pm.) In the end we went to Murasaki (their neighborhood go to Japanese place). Sure enough we were lucky to be seated upon arrival still on a busy Saturday night. I introduced my fave ankimo アンキモ to them. (Yummy!) He even kindly drove me back to Northern VA a good 40 minutes out of his way to make sure I got back to my friend's place. Such a gentleman and I am grateful for such good friends!

Sunday was my last day and total lazy day. Pancakes, spam and eggs for breakfast. Then we chatted and I got a belated present. A mini version of my big sis' wedding album (where I was the maid of honor 2 years ago in upstate NY). Such an awesome gift! Then while chatting my mom wants to teach them how to make wontons! So we go to buy the stuff (took us an hour roundtrip) to Great Wall. Then we found out our flight was delayed. So thanks to the delay we were able to have some samples before departing. Cilantro, shrimp, mushrooms (fragrant), chives, waterchestnuts (so sweet!), pork, green onions (or scallions) as well as good rice wine, oyster sauce, salt, water, cornstarch were a few things mentioned.

Despite a delayed flight, we got back home to take the transportation and made it home by 12:20am. I was happy to finish #5 and #6 幸福喫茶3丁目 행복카페 3번가. Always puts a smile on my face! ^^

  • 마이 프린세스 My Princess (2011)

My Princess (2011) 마이 프린세스 is a 16 episode MBC drama that I enjoyed purely due to Kim Tae Hee. Usually I am not a fan of hers, but she played the sweet easy breezy princess Lee Seol (originally doesn't remember much as she is adopted). She is a college student who has a big crush on her handsome professor Nam Jung Woo (Ryo Soong Woo 류수영)(as do all the other female students) who is interested in reinstating the Korean Monarchy. His first love but now fiance to future love interest of the princess is Park HyeJin (Loved her in Family Outing so first drama to see her act) as an intelligent, beautiful but brittle woman Oh Yoon Joo who doesn't want the monarchy reinstated as her future fiance Park Hae Young (Song Seung Hun송승헌) would lose all his money.

Both Seung Hun and Tae Hee do an excellent job to keep the viewers enraptured even if the drama did drag a bit in the middle. (My favorite scenes were when the two leads were together. They had a great chemistry. Plus seeing Seung Hun in a suit---priceless!) Plus former singer AJ (when he was on his own) now part of B2ST/BEAST Lee Ki Kwang does a cute minor role as one of the Palace Cooks who has a crush on Lee Seol.

    OFFICIAL BLURB INFO of characters:

    Release Date: January 5, 2011
Lee-Sul (Kim Tae-Hee) is a woman who enters college later than other girls. Like her peers, they dream of one day becoming a princess, but for Lee-Sul she actually becomes a real life princess ...

Hae-Young (Song Seung-Heon) is a 31-year-old diplomat. He is the sole successor of the Daehan Jonghap Group (the largest conglomerate in Korea). Hae-Young is also handsome and graduated from an Ivy League school. Agreeing to his grandfather`s creed, Park Hae-Young decides to give up his rights to the company and all of his assets. This is all for a young woman named Lee-Sul.

Lee-Sul is a 25-year-old college student, majoring in Art History. She doesn't think about the secrets surrounding her birth or her stepsister who teased her behind her back. Lee-Sul keeps a shabby appearance and works several part time jobs on top of her college career. She also has a crush on her professor Nam Jung-Woo (Ryu Su-Yeong). One day, Lee-Sul becomes a princess overnight. In order to make her a princess, the President of the Daehan Jonghap Group offers all of his assets. 50,000,000 people stamp their approvals for her and royal families from all over the world sends congratulatory telegrams. Lee-Sul accepts the role of Princess, but she is now locked up in her palace and forced to study from dawn to late at night. Even worse, Park Hae-Young is her only instructor and he is snooty.

Yoon-Joo (Park Ye-Jin) is a 30-year-old woman, who works as the director of Hae-Young Museum. Her father is the secretary for the President of the Daehan Jong Group. Yoon-Joo hopes to marry Park Hae-Young one day to gain control over the company. Her plans come to a halt when the Princess suddenly appears. For the Princess, the President of the Daehan Jonghap Group returns all of his property to the community. Even Hae-Youngs begins to have favorable feelings for Lee-Sul. Yoon-Joo can't forgive Lee-Sul for what she has caused. Yoon-Jo then makes a plan and if it succeeds Korea will lose their imperial family.

Jung-Woo (Ryu Su-Yeong) is a professor, archeologist and holds a PH.D in the Arts. He is also popular among the female students. Jung-Woo grew up in a poor family. Even now with his high status, his financial situation isn't so good. Because of this, Jung-Woo hasn't proposed to his girlfriend Yoon-Joo. One day, something strange happens. Jung-Woo's student Lee-Sul (who always submits papers late, but works hard at excavation sites) turns out to be a princess. Lee-Sul then asks Jung-Woo to become an advisor for the "Redemption Committee of Imperial Family Cultural Assets".
